SockMine ambassador Ross Lamb took some time out to let us know how he is getting on so far this season.
What has been positive about the season so far?
It’s been a consistent year again which I am very pleased about. I hope I will be able to replicate this in the years to come; I’ve also had some good results that I am very content with.
What would you like to improve on?
I think there could have been a lot more high points and better results than I have had. In some races, I have had some great race winning opportunities that I would have usually put away. Whilst that is the case, however, I have been racing up against a much higher level of racer so I have to take that into consideration.
What would you say is the biggest reason you have been able to compete at this higher level?
We have been staying at a place called Cafe Sur Place which is absolutely amazing. This has got to be one of the factors that I’ve been able to be so consistent this year.
How many of you have been staying there?
There’s often 8-12 cyclists at Sur Place at one time, as we are all cyclists and want to achieve similar goals, we all get on really well.
I can imagine it gets very busy when you’re all in?
Yeah, it can be very hectic but there is always someone to chat to or have a laugh with. I think this helps us relax and focus more on the cycling. We have a cooking rota so that we are not all in the kitchen at once. As you can imagine 12 lads all wanting food at the same time was a nightmare to start off with.
What sort of support do you have in order to be abroad trying to become a professional?
Obviously, there are you (SockMine) who supply me with some great cycling socks, which I love! I’m also supported by the Dave Rayner Fund which is a charity set up to help aspiring cyclists live abroad and pursue becoming a professional. They actually support four other cyclists that are over here with me. I cannot thank them enough for the support they have given me. There is also my family and friends that are always there to lend me some support whenever I need it which is great.
What’s your favourite pair of socks and how do they help you when cycling?
My favourite pair of socks to wear are the cycle air long welt with merino. I find them amongst the most comfortable I have worn and they work perfectly when the temperatures aren’t so good.
What’s it like being away from friends and family back home?
It’s obviously hard being away from home for so long but you can’t live at home forever. I’m enjoying my experience over here and intend to come back next season.
What are your goals for the rest of the season?
Well in August I have the Ronde Van Oost-Vlaanderen which I am hoping to do well in. After that, there are few more interclub’s and Pro kermesses which again I hope I can perform consistently and hopefully win a few of them, before rounding off the season in October.
It was great to have a catch up with Ross and hopefully with all the support he has got he can achieve what he wants to this season.
