Catching up with SockMine Brand Ambassador Laura Siddall
Professional triathlete and SockMine ambassador, Laura Siddall was born in Mansfield, just down the road from our HQ.
She’s lived in various places around the world, including Sydney, New Zealand and San Francisco.
It was in San Francisco where she worked with world-renowned coach, Matt Dixon and his Purplepatch squad to go from complete beginner to four-time world champion (amateur) triathlete before turning professional.
In 2016, Laura became the sixth-fastest British woman of all time over the full iron distance, finishing in fourth position at Challenge Roth and breaking the nine-hour mark in a time of 8h 51m 59s.
Just this year she became the Ironman Australia Champion, proving that hard work and steely determination can bring huge success.
Laura has been working with SockMine for the past two years.
What first attracted her to us was the local connection, as we’re based where Laura grew up. However, it was our passion for what we do and emphasis on British-made products that led her to become our ambassador.
Laura says of the partnership: “Working with SockMine is very much a two-way relationship. As well as getting to wear the socks as I’m training and racing, it also allows me to give feedback to the company on what works and what doesn’t work, any issues or improvements and what designs might work well.
“SockMine really welcomes my feedback and takes it on board, so it’s great to have that relationship.”
She continues: “My love of socks wasn’t a big thing until I started working with SockMine. I just really love their product and their brand, particularly when you get a fresh pair! I now have a tradition where for every iron distance race that I have, I’ll have a fresh pair of socks from SockMine to wear for it!”
Versatility to care for your feet
Perhaps the reason Laura loves our socks so much is down to their versatility. With over 20 years’ experience in the sock industry, we’ve developed a variety of styles that protect and support for optimal performance.
We’re thrilled to have Laura on board as an ambassador for SockMine. Her input and experience goes a long way and we can’t wait to see where her career will take her to next.
Laura’s top three tips for budding triathletes
We couldn’t let Laura go without asking her advice for beginners who are looking to become triathletes. Her tips are:
- Start short, whether that be a sprint or an enticer distance triathlon, just so you can get used to the event and get into the community.
- You really don’t need to spend loads of money on equipment. Instead, you could hire a wetsuit or borrow one from a friend, and you definitely don’t need a flashy bike. Laura completed her first triathlon on a hybrid mountain/road bike with her trainers on!
- Join a triathlon group or coaching group as it’s always more fun to train with friends!
